The University of Ioannina’s Museum of the History of Medicine, was inaugurated on 1st of June 2018 in Ioannina, Greece.
The history of Medicine Museum of the University of Ioannina serves as unique destination of preservation, education, research and promotion of the History of Medicine from antiquity to the present day. It is the first Museum of the History of Medicine in Greece and became reality from the vision of Stefanos Geroulanos, Professor of Surgery University of Zurich, Professor of History of Medicine University of Ioannina, President of the International Hippocratic Foundation, Kos; who had inspired and curated this Museum.
More than 10,000 exhibits relevant to Medicine from antiquity to the present day, are housed in the showrooms of the Museum and are presented in carefully constructed rooms. Surgical instruments, medical objects, books, stamps, masks and garments, icons, statues and equipment relevant to biomedical sciences from previous historical periods unveil the history of medicine.
The inauguration of the History of Medicine Museum and the Hippocratic Botanic Garden, which is part of the museum and was carried out by the non-governmental organisation “Hippocrates 2,500 years”, took place on 1st of June 2018; with the companies APIVITA and APIGEA as main sponsors. The following scholars were present in the opening ceremony: Georgios D. Kapsalis, Professor, Dean of the University of Ioannina; Alexandros Kakrimanis, Regional Governor of Epirus Andreas; D. Fotopoulos, Professor, Deputy Rector, President of the Museum Committee of the University of Ioannina; Ioannis Georgiou, Professor, Dean of the School of Health Sciences of the University of Ioannina; Minas Pashopoulos, Professor , President of the Department of Medicine of the School of Health Sciences. A guided tour of the Museum was performed by its Initiator Prof. Stefanos Geroulanos in collaboration with Dr. Dimitrios Fountis.
