Following the 1962 publication of Rachel Carson’s Silent Spring, the US government sought to regulate environmental pollutants in the name of controlling human cancer.

A generation of new laboratory tests was developed to identify potential carcinogens, with unexpected results. By the 1980s, a public anxious about pesticides was confronted with findings that the natural components of foods and beverages were already carcinogenic.

Professor Angela Creager’s lecture will offer a critical appraisal of the diet-cancer conundrum against the emergence of genetic toxicology.
