After dozens of attempts, finally i got the proper methodology which allows me to grow as much variety as it could be with the using of such nutrient. The way of my seeding is extremely different from the microbiological practices, so i have no incubators, and sterility, it happens as naturally as you cooking your meal. That is why all of these compositions looks so different and fulfilled, I’m not trying to get rid of some – i just appreciate their variable chaos. But also have kinda unwanted species, which covers all the area in just several hours, so i cant see what is underneath, for example mucor, looks like a huge cotton candy.

Concerning the process, I use the air we breath in and surfaces around me, so it is a kind of microbiological representation of the expanse. Also i can collect samples from the forest, river, sea, skin, public places, anywhere, as the air is everywhere. If i need an exact placing – i can touch it and then touch my petri dish, where the hand becomes a conductor.

Capturing the nonexistent, but still alive, makes me feel closer to the initial idea of being.

Daria Fedorova is a Moscow based bio artist, an alumnae of British Higher School of Art and Design, Fine art faculty. Since the Foundation course till now, she is developing methodology of artistic cultivation of microorganisms, growing under different conditions and states. Collecting samples from the air and surroundings and manipulating with artificial and natural dyes she experimenting with uncontrolled biological growth and new textures. One of the most controversial project she conduct, was analysis of Church bacteria, people leave on the top of icon glass, while kissing it and touching. Exploration of the Universal Microbiome makes her work expanded to a variety of different fields, such as social, religious and scientific. Now she is working with bio films and creating new type of portraying, using unique composition of organisms on human skin.
