Sara Monteiro’s work sits at a compelling crossroads between medicine and the arts, where scientific rigor meets visual imagination. Drawing on her background in neuroscience and research in fields such as Alzheimer’s and neuroanatomy, she transforms complex medical knowledge into expressive visual forms. Her practice reinterprets the human body not just as a biological structure, but as a site of perception, memory, and consciousness. By merging data-driven insight with artistic exploration, she creates a unique dialogue between clinical understanding and creative expression—bridging disciplines that are often seen as separate, and revealing the deeply human narratives embedded within science.

BIO
Sara Monteiro is based in Paris and is an active visual artist and book illustrator. She completed her studies in psychology and neuroscience at Maastricht University, and her art revolves around exploration of related concepts. Following her data science degree, she began combining her research experience in cognitive and computational neuroscience with machine learning methods and scientific communication approaches which enable both design aspects and clear mathematical conceptualization. She conducted research particularly in the field of Alzheimer's, neurology and health technology, conducted at various European insitutions such as Amsterdam UMC, ICM in Paris and LIH. She taught neuroanatomy for four years at her former university, which shaped her understanding of anatomy, which differs from conventional illustrations in science. In addition to anatomy, she conceptually explores themes of human consciousness and history, the relationship between time, perception, and multidimensional reality. She works across classical, abstract, and surrealist traditions. She is a active artist in the Parisian art scene where her studio space is located, and her practice has been exhibited across Europe through collective and solo exhibitions.
