BIO
George Petrou is a London-based artist, born in 1981 in Paphos, Cyprus. In 2008 he was awarded a BA in Fine Art from Chelsea College of Art and Design and since July 2011 he holds an MA in Fine Art/Photography from the Royal College of Art, London. Petrou mainly works with moving image, photography, sculpture, and video installation. Alongside his individual practice he works and collaborates with the London Deanery General Surgical Skills Programme, Imperial College London and develops Surgical Simulators. His practice as a visual artist explores the human body; its strengths, promises, and boundaries. Deriving from this practice, he designs surgical simulators with high technical and visual realism, which mimic real-life tissue behaviour and anatomical structure. Combining artistic and scientific rigour, he developed a synthetic model used for training senior surgical trainees in open inguinal hernia repair and a dynamic breast simulator. In December 2012 he created O.I.H.R his first video piece as a resident artist in the Department of Surgery and Cancer, Division of Surgery at Imperial College London. In this work he transformed the high fidelity hernia simulator into a black and white synthetic body fragment. Then he performed the procedure and filmed it in colour.
